Development

Maïwenn, the writer, director, and producer of the upcoming French biographical drama film “Jeanne du Barry”, has revealed in an interview with Première that she has been passionate about bringing Madame du Barry’s story to the big screen since 2006. She approached Johnny Depp in late 2019, offering him the lead role of Louis XV, and Depp agreed without even reading the script after his assistant fell in love with it.

However, following Depp’s loss in his libel trial against The Sun in November 2020, Maïwenn was uncertain whether he would still be on board for the project. She reached out to him and discovered that he feared she might not want him in the film due to the trial’s outcome. Maïwenn reassured him that he was still her first choice for the role, and the project would not proceed without him.

In January 2022, it was officially announced that Depp would be playing King Louis XV in the drama. The cast also includes Louis Garrel, Pierre Richard, and Noémie Lvovsky in undisclosed roles. The film was sold for distribution by Wild Bunch during the 2022 Cannes Film Festival. Later, it was revealed that the film was shot in French, and Benjamin Lavernhe, Melvil Poupaud, Pascal Greggory, and India Hair joined the cast. Netflix will handle distribution in France, and the film is set to premiere as the opening film at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival on May 16, 2023, before its theatrical release in France on the same day by Le Pacte.

Filming

Principal photography for the movie started on July 26, 2022, in Versailles and other parts of Paris and lasted for 11 weeks. The first teaser image of Johnny Depp in his role as Louis XV was released by Why Not Productions on August 10, 2022. Filming was completed by mid-October of the same year. On November 1, 2022, Wild Bunch International announced the key territories that had acquired rights to distribute the movie, and also released another image of Depp in character.

In her first interview about the movie with Le Journal de Dimanche on December 31, 2022, Maïwenn mentioned that her staging of the film is different from Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette, as it is not pop or rock. However, she did take some liberties with the film and expects “purists” to criticize her. Maïwenn also praised Depp’s ability to transform into his character, describing him as “a real chameleon” who enjoys transformation. Regarding the dialogue and Depp’s first-time acting in French, Maïwenn stated that her movie has limited dialogue and Depp’s expressiveness was highly impressive to her, likening it to that of a silent film actor’s.

Budget

In January 2023, it was revealed that the Red Sea Film Foundation would be providing financial support for the film. The CEO of the foundation, Mohammed Al Turki, praised the movie as a one-of-a-kind biographical feature and a testament to their commitment to collaborating with top-notch writers, directors, and producers.[19][20]

On March 30, 2023, it was announced that Jeanne Du Barry had been selected as part of the 33% of FIF-approved films in 2022 directed or co-directed by women. Additionally, it was revealed that it was one of only three French films with a budget exceeding 10 million euros. The movie had a budget of $22.4 million.
